Introduction

As Lutheranism spread, the Roman Catholic Church convened another council at Wittenberg in November of 1535 as a further attempt to bring about peace with Martin Luther. Luther, however, no longer had any faith in the pope's sincerity. Once more he asserted that the pope was Antichrist. He said it was impossible for either the pope or any of the papal councils to bring about reform; the Bible alone was the source of reformation.
